Luba Awanceruni...
A grassroots neighbourhood organisation
Luba Awanceruni is a grassroots Garifuna organisation established in Livingston's Nevagó neighbourhood in 1995 to help improve community members' lives. Although Nevagó is one of Livignston's oldest districts, many of its residents are poor, without access to basic services or job opportunities.
Luba Awanceruni wants to make a difference in people's lives. To this end, we are working on several fronts. We have implemented several community development projects; we offer Spanish and Garifuna language classes to local children; we educate residents about their human rights; and we act as a strong voice promoting positive social change in our neighbourhood.
However, we cannot fulfill our mandate without access to funding. Although we have benefited from the generosity of many individuals and groups over the years, it is vital that our projects be self-sustaining. To this end, we have established a traveller's lodge which offers guests unique yet comfortable accommodation while creating jobs for local people and providing our organization with a reliable source of income.
